God’s Positioning System

For many of us, we depend on our GPS (global positioning system) to guide us from one place to another. Most cell phones have this navigation feature. Some cars also come pre-programmed with similar networks. When we input our destination, we usually look for the shortest and easiest route. However, from time to time, our GPS takes us in a direction we did not anticipate. This has happened to me on more than one occasion.

One Sunday after leaving church, I decided to make- what I thought would be- a brief trip to one of my favorite stores.

Although I knew another path, I chose to my use my GPS. After all, it was designed to get me there quicker and faster, right? Wrong! I found myself winding through unfamiliar neighborhoods, traveling over rough train tracks, and approaching a dead end. I thought to myself, “Where in the world am I going, and will I ever get to my destination”? I must admit that I strongly considered going in a different direction, but I was determined to “stay the course”. I knew that turning around would only delay my arrival. So, I told myself “Just keep driving”.

My decision to keep going proved to be the right one because I discovered many new things along the way. There were restaurants, parks, shops, and buildings that I was completely unaware of. The beautiful downtown district was filled with activity, and new growth replaced empty unused land. Yes, I encountered some rough crossings, navigated winding curves, experienced traffic jams, and faced some dead ends. However, what I learned along the way was worth the ride.

What is the Message?

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “Life is not about the destination, it is about the journey”. This is especially true for Christian believers. God’s positioning system (GPS) usually takes us on the long, inconvenient, and uncomfortable route toward our divine destiny. The Scriptures are filled with examples of people who experienced unforeseen challenges on life’s journey, yet they were determined to reach their destination.

David overcame belittlement, fought wild animals, defeated a giant, and experienced tremendous loss before he became a king. Abraham was seventy-five years old when he left everything that was familiar, traveling to an unknown place. Yet, he trusted God. We can also learn from Joseph, who was placed in a pit, before he was promoted to the palace. Although these men lived at different times in history, the common thread is that all of them traveled an unconventional path to purpose.

Today, I encourage you to rely on God’s positioning system (GPS) in your daily walk with Him. He has promised to lead you. Just keep walking! “The LORD says “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you…” (Ps. 32:8 NLT). Therefore, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take” (Prov. 3:5-6 NLT). Remember, as you navigate through the busyness of your day, be sure to listen for God’s messages in the moment.
